Tom King Classic Half Marathon

Last year I ran three half marathons in Nashville and of the three this one is by far the flattest, the most affordable, and my favorite. They cap the field around 1500 and a bulk of the race is an out and back on the greenway with a finish on the 50-yard line in the Titans Stadium. I thoroughly enjoyed the race last year and I knew it would be one I would run again this year. When I signed up I originally expected to be running with Beth but it turned out that she wasn't able to make it.

Allan loves waking up early and sleeping in the car while I drive to races!

Instead Allan and I went up the morning of, picked up my packet, and waited for the start which is right in front of LP Field (Titans Stadium). Just like last year it was cold at the start but warmed up once we got started and the sun was out. We ran a couple of miles before hitting the greenway which is my favorite part of this course.

I like this picture because I look happy and I actually could pass for having a butt!

Honestly the only thing I don't like about this race in general is the lack of runner etiquette and there's only so much a race director and staff can do to control that. People run 3-4 wide on the greenway section and more than once I saw runners on my side interfere with lead runners heading back in. Don't get me wrong, I'm super glad that some girl and her very bestest friends decided to run a half for her 22nd birthday which made it "a birthday she would never forget" but there was no reason that they had to run 4 wide for MILES on the greenway. I finally couldn't take it anymore and ran faster than I usually would have just to put some space between myself and their pack. Next time ladies, run two wide and stay to the right! Hopping off my soapbox now...

One of the views along the greenway

Alright, back to the race. It's very scenic along the greenway and quiet so if that's your thing then you'd love this course. You also get some pretty great views of the Nashville skyline as you run back in for the finish. Several people ran with headphones so if you can't run without your music and enjoy the views you'll have your music to keep you entertained.

It's nice to get to a point on the course where you can see the stadium and even though you have a mile or so to go at least you know where the finish line is. Once you enter Titans Stadium they put you up on the jumbotron and when you are approaching the finish line they announce your name and where you are from. Last year Titans cheerleaders handed out medals but this year there were local children that had that honor. This wasn't my best half but it wasn't my worst one either. I finished at 2:47:45 and I'll take it since I had to take a bathroom stop around mile 10. I know this is a course I could be much faster on and I wish I had felt better and been able to run faster but I still had fun and that's what it's all about for me.

Sprint to the finish-no idea what I'm doing with my hands here

Besides the usual water, bagels, and bananas offered post-race they have a nice hot breakfast upstairs in the clubhouse where they have pastries, croissants, hashbrowns, and coffee. This year my stomach was a little angry so I didn't stick around to eat much or to try to win a door prize but we did last year and really enjoyed ourselves even though I didn't eat much then either. They have plenty of food for runners and your family and friends so it's a nice race to have people come and watch you at the finish and then be able to sit down and eat with you after the race.

Apparently I think the more I pump my arms the faster it will make me

This year the shirts were a yellow color that I'm not a big fan of but it's different than anything else I have so I can't say that I hate it. The medals were the same design as last year's but the colors were yellow and brown which again I didn't really like. Overall this is my favorite half in Nashville because I hate hills and large crowds so if you are in the Nashville area you should check this one out!

What do you love/hate most about some of your favorite/worst races?
Have you run a race in Nashville?

  1. You got lots of great pictures! I like flat, fast, non crowded crocuses. I hate having to weave through 10k/5k runners when I am getting towards the end. Really seem to run in large groups three and four wide. So irritating!

  2. Some of my friends are obsessed with Nashville - they went on a work conference there recently! Now I am dying to go! People running 4 wide....EW. You can stay right on that soapbox about that. It's just inconsiderate. Glad you had an enjoyable race (for the most part)!

  3. I love flat races!! and ones without a huge crowd, (but enough that Im not last). And I think your time is awesome!! Where did you get those pants. LOVE them!!

  4. That's an awesome finish! I was in Nashville in October and stayed right across from LP field! I ran around the stadium and through the city before my fiance and friend woke up...haha Your time sounds pretty great to me :)

  5. I like the flat races personally. Two of my fave are the U of I and the Des Moines half. Both Very scenic and green. Community support high too and lots of water stations. I didn't care for the 'cliches' of folks who had a negative air about them and ran 4 wide, 2 deep at times. But since I'm slow I didn't have to deal with them long.

  6. that looks like so much fun, love the pic of the skyline! You look strong at the finish too, awesome job! I hate when people don't think of other runners during a race. Last week, someone spit and it almost landed right on me. So gross. I love flat courses with scenic views - something by the water is always fun!

  7. Now this is my kind of race. Small with good food at the end! Congrats on another finish!!

  8. I like races with flat finishes, nothing worse than running up hill to finish a race. I like rolling hills but again not huge hills. I like it when there are people I know racing and good food, and nice medals at the end.
    Awesome job Suz!!

  9. You are an animal! Great job! I know this is gross, but I've had people do a farmer's blow in front of me and I feel like it's landing on me. GROSS!! And no, I've never even been to Nashville but I hope to visit someday!

  11. Congratulations Suzanne! Looks like a beautiful race!

I haven't run in Nashville but I would love to, maybe we'll take a trip there so we can meet! Before our Ironman that is :)

  13. Awesome. One of my bucket list races is to finish in a stadium! My favorite race is in Carlsbad, it is such a beautiful course with rolling hills that make it seem so much faster than it is. I'm hoping to fly back next January for it!

  15. Congratulations on finishing another half marathon. Wow!

I love your pictures - such a beautiful day and nice course, too.

  16. Good job! I love that they have real food afterwards; some of the races are pretty poor with the after party. It's too bad your stomach wasn't really good enough to take part!

  17. Congratulations, Suz! You look super fabulous in those pics!

(I am so jealous you were on the Jumbotron. This race may be somewhere in my future...lol)

  18. Congratulations on a great race! You look wonderful. I'm with you on the runner etiquette thing...some people just don't pay attention.

  19. Congratulations on the great race! Love a flat race that's not crowded!

  20. This sounds like such a fantastic race! If I'm ever in Nashville... :) Or can someday travel for a race. ;)

Totally with you on the etiquette thing. I hate it when people don't stay to the right on an out and back course!

  21. That sounds like a great half!! The pictures were really great. The hot breakfast sounds like it could be awesome!!

Did the RD have anyone on bikes leading the runners back in? That might be something that helps!!

  22. Great job!!! I love those sprint to the finish shots! Whenever I look at my sprint pics in races, it looks like I'm walking for some reason, must be the angle;) My worst race ended up being a super flat course. I thought I would love it, but it was too boring (plus it rained and the wind blew hard the whole time). I have never been to Nashville.

  23. Congratulations on your 1/2! I've never run a race in Nashville... Or outside of Minnesota/North Dakota for that matter! It looks like a beautiful, scenic course.

  24. I am getting ready to run my 2nd marathon which happens to be the country music marathon in Nashville and I am terrified. I am so excited to visit the city because I have never been, but I LOATHE hills. I slow down on them so much I feel like I might as well be walking.

  25. Suzanne-

That's a good time in my opinion! I would LOVE to run a race where they call out your name and where you are from-talk about inspiring and motivating.

The running etiquette you were talking about was VERY prominent at the Disney Princess Half-I think because there were so many walkers and maybe they weren't used to the "code"?? :)

I DETEST hills as well. They kill me, my legs, and my lungs!

This one sounds like a great race-loved the scenery since I'm a nature loving kind of gal!

  26. The running more than 2-wide business is really obnoxious. I'm 100% with you there! And that race sounds really nice! I especially love that they serve the hot breakfast in the clubhouse. That's a really nice touch.

  27. Ugh, I remember doing the Big Sur Marathon years ago and the 21-milers merged in with the marathoners (at mile 25 for us - duh) and man, they were so obnoxious by running 5-7 abreast. So much weaving on that course ... but it was incredibly gorgeous :). Sorry you weren't feeling better but sooo glad you had a great time there. The medal and shirt are really cool!

  28. When people run really wide across without a break in between them, that really bugs me too. Sorry that happened to you! Love that you got to run on the field! Congrats!

  29. Sounds like a great race!!!
