A Sound Among the Trees Book Review

A Sound Among the Trees by Susan Meissner is a wonderful story that reveals the secrets of Holly Oak and the women who have called it home. We begin the story following Marielle from across the country to begin a new life in Virginia with her husband and his two young children. As Marielle tries to fit into her new life the rumors surrounding her new home Holly Oak get the best of her and she does some investigating on her own. Adelaide or Mimi as they call her insists that the house doesn't have a ghost but Marielle isn't convinced by the woman she is learning to embrace as her own grandmother. After Adelaide's fall her daughter Caroline makes a surprise homecoming and decides Marielle deserves to know the truth about Holly Oak. Susannah, Adelaide's great grandmother, was believed to be a traitor and a Union spy but is that really the truth?

This book was a quick read and one I would recommend to anyone who enjoys period fiction of the Civil War. The only drawback is the loose ends left untied at the end. While we learn the truth about Susannah we are left wondering about what happened to others.
