Finally Friday (& the Labor Day post I forgot)

Have you had the chance to enter our giveaway for some awesome Pink goodies? We are doing this giveaway to gain support for the Liz Hurley Ribbon Run we are running on October 15, 2011. The race raises money to support Breast Cancer Awareness and provide state of the equipment for early detection and more effective treatment. Check out Monday's post for the details! The only mandatory entry is following our blog so get yourself entered and check out the post for additional ways to win!

Now I realize that it is literally the last day of September and Labor Day seems like a distant memory for most of us but I really do want to share some snapshots of what turned out to be quite the weekend!

Jenn & Allan after the big surprise!

View from the back deck of the lake house
My dorm from freshman year where I met my best girl friend Caroline
Early in 2010 my friend Nicole came up with a wonderful idea to get our friends from Auburn Wrestling & Mat Cats together one football weekend a year at least (last year it was 3!!!) and I readily agreed. I was excited to check the football schedule and pick a date for the first reunion. As luck would have it people's schedules worked out to drive or fly in for two more weekends (LSU, UGA) and we cheered our Auburn Tigers on to an undefeated season surrounded by those we love!

Laying in front of Samford Hall-I took this same picture with Caroline when she graduated. You were there in spirit Caroline!

The boys with the lathe-Allan can give you a little history lesson on this! It's one of 2 in the world!

Our beloved Toomer's Oak
This year we nailed down Labor Day weekend for the reunion hoping to celebrate Auburn's first win, an extra day off, and Matt's birthday. The rain did its best to ruin our weekend but no such luck with this group! We had a great time and went our separate ways on Monday but lucky for us we had almost everyone at our house the next weekend for the Auburn vs. Mississippi State game!!!

This is just one of the 3 cabinets (plus the counter & refrigerator) we filled with groceries for the weekend. Hotdogs anyone?!
Momma's Love at Momma Goldberg's Deli AKA Momma G's-normally it looks much better than this but they mass produce like 1,000 of these on game days!!

Matt's Butterfinger Blizzard DQ Ice Cream Birthday Cake-yum yum!!
Every year we learn how to plan a little better for feeding this many people and each time we've learned a few more things to do or not do the next time. I'm already excited about next year and spending a weekend with our closest friends! As I type this I can't help but feel so blessed that even though we live in Atlanta, Auburn, Birmingham, Boston, Charleston, Gulf Shores, Houston, Huntsville/Madison, Maui, Nashville, and Orlando we remain close and find time for most of us to get together for this special weekend.

Hope you all get to spend this weekend with someone you love!

My First 10 Mile Run!

I know the title leaves little to the imagination as to what we are celebrating on the blog today so I'll just get right to it. As I was sitting at Starbuck's yesterday I thought to myself "I bet I can run 10 miles". For most of you this probably doesn't sound all that crazy but I've never run more than 3.5 miles in my life, ever! I knew I could run a longer distance but I made excuses about how much more time it would take and how I would have to walk for parts of it and how I'm not that fast. If Allan had been home I'm pretty sure he would have thought I was crazy and possibly put me on restriction from Pumpkin Spice Lattes. After my trip to Starbuck's I came home, finished catching up on all of your blogs, and then I was ready to run!

My Before

I decided to attempt my 10 miles at the local community center where 12 laps around the indoor track = 1 mile. I knew better than to run somewhere unfamiliar or somewhere that if something happened I would be far from help. I stopped when I pulled up just to take this picture for you guys!

Our community center is on the left and our library (where I go for book club) is on the right
I did some light stretching but I planned to stop and stretch again after I walked a few laps and loosened up my legs. I was armed with my water bottle, Iphone, and camera because doesn't everyone take a camera to run?! After my first 3 laps I shed my light jacket, stretched, and started to run. I made myself stop after each mile to drink a few sips of water. There's no water allowed on the track so I had to walk into the stairwell where I stashed my bottle. I did stop my watch for all my water breaks because if I were running a race I would have grabbed a cup and kept running or if I was running outside I would have been running with water bottle in hand. By the end of mile 2 it was time to get rid of the soffee shorts and run in my Auburn performance shirt and my favorite spandex shorts.

Tigers Gym

Honestly I felt really good and ran a majority of the 10 miles. I did take breaks to walk 1-2 laps when I started to feel like my legs were getting tight. I would walk, stretch, and then run again. Somewhere around lap 75/120 I started feeling like I felt better running than walking and I could really tell I was finding my stride and setting a pace I was comfortable at. I don't run with music but they had music playing in the gym which was fine. I found myself barely paying attention to it because in order to not lose count of what lap I was on I was constantly repeating the number for the lap I had just completed in my head. I think this kept me really focused on holding my head up, keeping my shoulders back, watching my stride, and breathing normally.

Tide Gym
Miles 7 & 8 were the toughest because my right hamstring was feeling a little tight. I stopped multiple times to stretch and finally after one long stretch it seemed to be ok. I did my best to take pictures of my watch when I stopped for water after each mile but I didn't think to do this until mile 3 and I somehow forgot mile 9 but my splits are as follows:

Miles 1-3: Average of 11:44 per mile (pretty pleased with that since I walked 1/2 of the first mile warming up)
Mile 4: 11:28
Mile 5: 12:04
Mile 6: 11:43
Mile 7: 12:34
Mile 8: 12:57
Miles 9 & 10: Average of 12:13

I wanted to make it in under 2 hours so bad but I was :25 short
Now I know I'm not breaking any records anytime soon with these splits but after today I know I can run the 15K next Saturday and hopefully I will hit my goal time of 2 hours. Next time I run 10 miles I plan on shaving off those extra 25 seconds and staying under 2 hours. Being able to run 10 miles shows me that if I want to run a half marathon I can. I won't be running it in under 2 hours but I know I can run it and finish strong. I wish I had the time for my last mile because I'm pretty confident it was my fastest. I tried to run the entire mile at a pace faster than I had ran the previous 9.

Not nearly as red in the face as I thought I might be and it was pretty chilly in the gym so I didn't get as sweaty either
If Allan could just hurry up and come home I could start registering us for half marathons. I've got my eye on one in November and January!

Oooh, I almost forgot to remind you guys to enter our giveaway if you haven't already done so. It's for a Breast Cancer Awareness Prize Pack and all the details can be found here!

A Little Spice & Fantasy Football News

Good morning!

Have you entered our giveaway for the Breast Cancer Awareness Prize Pack? Check out yesterday's post for the details. You can enter to win until next Tuesday!

This week I'm nannying overnight for the little boy I keep so that means eating fish sticks, mac & cheese, and broccoli for dinner and waking up an hour before I normally do. That also means driving past our Kroger in the mornings and it has a wonderful Starbuck's inside!!!

How cute is this?!
I settled into my makeshift work space with a Venti Pumpkin Spice Latte, my netbook, and my Iphone. Wouldn't you know that not 5 minutes later a middle aged woman sits down right next to me. I was the only person sitting at a table in the entire place! There are 15 tables (I counted) and of all the places she can sit she picks the table right next to me. Then my phone rings and it was Allan. This will probably be the only time I talk to him all day and I have a thing about strangers overhearing my phone conversations with him (no, we don't say anything bad but it's my time with him and it should be personal and private). I politely began transferring my work station to another table further away (but not before I snapped this picture). My new space is right next to the door and an incredibly loud fan but with a Pumpkin Spice latte and my new cozy 3/4 sleeve Auburn sweatshirt on nothing is getting me down today!

My makeshift work station
No sooner had I settled myself AGAIN when her friends arrive. Miniskirt Mama (I say this because she is at least mid-40's and wearing a skirt shorter than what I would wear) and the third woman (who is obviously the most insecure of the three judging by what I've observed in the last 45 minutes) commenced the giggling and loud talking that parallels that of teenage girls talking about Justin Beiber! Quiet time is over for me until I'm back at the house. Determined to get my blog post cranked out I'm typing furiously anxious to get back in my truck and hit the road for home!

Well, I wish I could say that I didn't lose in Fantasy Football again but I can't. Allan's older brother beat me by 1 (yep, 1) with the final score being 100-99. It was a heartbreaking loss but Allan and my sister did beat him the past two weeks so I suppose he was due a win eventually. Allan won his game 81-47 so he's pretty excited. Next week I'm playing our friend that he played this week and he is playing my sister's husband. Fingers crossed that we can both bring home the win next weekend! I do have to say that Wes Welker scored 34 points for me and I'm seriously thinking of changing my name from the Huntsville Holsteins to Team Wes Welker!

Happy Tuesday everyone! Hope your quiet time this morning has been uninterrupted, productive, and possibly even includes a Pumpkin Spice Latte!

Who's Ready for Another Giveaway?!

As promised we are doing another giveaway!!! I absolutely love entering giveaways (and winning, duh) so my goal is to do at least one (but I'm shooting for 2) giveaway each month on here. Thank you again to everyone who entered our 5 Days of Giveaways earlier this month!!! This giveaway is a little bit of a follow up to that one. We still have almost 3 weeks until the Liz Hurley Ribbon Run so we still have plenty of time to raise more support for Breast Cancer Awareness & Research.

They have this on Cater Lawn every October at Auburn-I love it!
For the Liz Hurley the donations stay local and provide state of the art equipment to detect and treat breast cancer more efficiently and effectively at Huntsville Hospital. I love knowing that I'm supporting something local that I or someone I love may rely on one day to save their life. I realize most of you are young and you're probably thinking that your mom, aunts, or grandmothers are more likely to get breast cancer than you. While that is true, it is not always the case.

The pink tractor they had last year for the Liz Hurley
Our sister in law was my age (I'm 27, almost 28) when she found herself battling breast cancer for a second time. She was diagnosed the first time when she was pregnant with our youngest nephew (her second son) and barely 26 years old. When I ran my first 5K (with NO and I mean no training) on Memorial Day 2010 I started feeling tired pretty quick and all I could think of were all the loved ones (family & friends) I had lost that couldn't run that day. I thought of her more than anyone, choked back tears, and ran my heart out. That's when I decided we would start running the Liz Hurley and that it would become a tradition for our family and friends. We are willing to pay the entry fee for anyone who will run with us and hope to continue to do this every year.

I don't say any of this to guilt anyone into supporting us but to let you guys know that this means more to us than putting pink ribbons on our cars and declaring this to be a cause we are passionate about. Even if we move to a different city I intend to run this race every year until I die. We will be one of the 80-year old couples walking the 5K hand-in-hand.

Now for the fun stuff, the giveaway!!! I went to Bed, Bath, & Beyond after we sent one of close friends back to Boston with one of our Auburn National Champion tumblers (we can't have just one because Allan is not good at sharing his) and I ran across these little goodies that I could NOT put down. As soon as I saw the display I got excited about doing another giveaway! I had to get one of the pink ribbon stickers for Allan and the pig calendar is what we are using to log our expenses in. After getting another BBB coupon in the mail I may be going back to get the cup included in this giveaway for myself! The calendar runs from September 2011-December 2013 and the pink ribbon is small but the perfect size in my opinion!

Here's the details on how you can enter:
1. Follow our blog and leave us a comment telling us you are-MANDATORY (1 entry)
2. Blog about our giveaway and leave a comment with the link to your blog where you mention it (2 entries)
3. Send a friend to enter our giveaway and comment to tell us who you sent (2 entries)
4. Follow Allan's blog (he's an engineer so don't expect cupcakes and rainbows-think video games and electronics) and leave a comment letting us know (1 entry)
5. Donate in support of the Liz Hurley Ribbon Run we are running (click here to donate) and leave the comment "I Donated" (5 entries-see note below)
6. Share how breast cancer has affected yourself or someone you know in a comment (1 entry)

The giveaway will run until Tuesday, October 4, 2011, at 11:59 PM CST. Good luck to everyone! We may like to throw extra goodies into our giveaways (hint, hint) that we won't reveal until we announce a winner so keep that surprise in mind! Thank you again for the support you guys have already shown us as we prepare for this race!

Love Butterflies!

I'm finally responding to the post of Jenn's Adventures I was tagged in Labor Day Weekend. Better late than never huh?! This award is for being a Social Butterfly so I am completely flattered! I really do make an effort to read all of your posts each day and respond to everyone who comments on mine. Thanks for tagging me Jenn! I have referenced this amazing girlie's blog several times on my blog so if you haven't made your way over to her blog you should do it today.

Check out this picture of Jenn's! Who's ready to leave for HI now?!

Name Your Favorite Color: Blue (and orange when they are together!)

Heisman Poses outside Jordan Hare
Name Your Favorite Song: First Favorite Song ever was Garth Brooks-The River, can't say I have a favorite one at the moment. I'm pretty much hooked on the only Christian station we have here. It helps keep my road rage under control when the soccer moms make me crazy (See What Whizzes Me Off for more on that!)

Oh, the 90's. Photo credit here

Name Your Favorite Dessert: Betty Crocker's Supreme Bar-Cookie Brownie Bar. If you haven't scooped this delicious box mix off the shelf at the grocery store and made it for yourself then you are missing out! I love chocolate chip cookies and brownies so the two of them together is almost more than my little taste buds can handle!

What Whizzes You Off: Soccer moms driving their minivan or SUV through a 25 mph school zone driving 45 mph and talking on their cell phone while riding my bumper since I am driving 25 mph so as not to run over a child or get a speeding ticket

When You're Upset You:  Cry if I'm sleep deprived, eat chocolate if it's "that" week, journal if it's something I can't wrap my head around, or watch mindless TV

Priester's Pecans Fiddlesticks

Your Favorite Pet: Lucky (shhh, don't tell Sasha!). He's such a big softie and super snuggly! This dog is the epitome of unconditional love.

Is this not the cutest lab you've ever seen?!

Black or White: Black-I'm never tan enough to look good in white!

Who doesn't need another little black dress?

Best Feature: Legs but Allan would probably have a different answer which is why he isn't answering these...

Not the best picture but I'm always the one taking the pictures so I don't have as many of me

Fall TV Lineup

Hands up if you are excited for all of our shows to be back on TV. Ok, now that we are all in agreement, let's check out my fall TV lineup. First let me say that I don't watch all of these every week. More likely than not some shows will fall to the way side and I'll quit watching them and others I will watch online at some point later in the week.

New shows I'm watching this fall:

Hart of Dixie-new show on the CW that is supposedly based here in AL (After seeing a picture of her wearing an AL jersey my excitement has dropped but nonetheless I will be tuning in next Monday for the premiere.)

Find more info and pictures here
Next up is Revenge which premiered tonight on ABC and I love it! This has just earned itself a spot in my Fall TV lineup that I don't think will be replaced anytime soon. There's a yellow lab named Sammy in the show that I must say I am in love with since he looks like my Lucky. The show has a very mysterious edge to it that has me asking so many questions.

For more info check out ABC's page on the show
Not least but last is The Secret Circle on the CW. This is based on a series of books by LJ Smith (same guy who wrote The Vampire Diaries series of books that were made into a show on the CW two years ago).  I haven't watched the first episode yet and I have the books but I haven't gotten around to reading them yet. This may or may not make the cut for my fall TV lineup but since I watch The Vampire Diaries it will be worth checking out at some point.

Check out the CW page for more info

Old Favorites:

Castle-if you aren't watching Castle, you should be! This is hands down one of the best shows in YEARS! Both my husband and I love it. We change the channel from Monday Night Football to watch this (and you know that's a big deal for a guy to change the channel from football to a tv show).

Click here for more info on the show
Biggest Loser-it's not going to be the same without Jillian or my favorite contestants from last year but I'm excited to watch the 12th season of BL. I always find something inspiring in each and every episode that everyone needs to hear regardless of our shape or size. I missed Episode 1 so I am going to catch up tomorrow so I can figure out who my favorites are!

Bones-Everyone in my family loves this show and after last year's season finale I am on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happens with Bones and Booth. Unfortunately it's not scheduled to premiere until the beginning of November so I'm going to have to wait a little longer.

Grey's Anatomy & Private Practice-I have been watching both of these shows since their very first episodes and I really hope that this season of both shows is better than last season. I HATED the finale of Grey's and found myself really unhappy with where they had taken all of their characters. I'm not even sure there's anyone I like on the show right now but hopefully this season will help me fall back in love with a show that I can't imagine not having in my fall TV lineup. Private Practice saw a lot of changes in its season finale as well so I'm anxious to see how all of that will pan out as well.

Recent Additions:

NCIS & NCIS: LA-My parents watch both of these and they got me hooked on them when I was at home and got to see several episodes they had DVRed. I've seen several of the older NCIS episodes and I just don't know how anyone doesn't like Gibbs. I may or may not watch these shows on the nights they are on. I may have to catch up online later.

Body of Proof-the first season of this show was last year and even though I didn't like her in previous shows there's something about Dana Delany's character in this show that I love. Not to mention the guys in the show are pretty funny.

Check out the show page on ABC

Criminal Minds-Criminal Minds was back on tonight and the premiere was pretty good. I was multi-tasking while watching it so there a few things that I was a little confused about. Prentiss is back as is JJ and they are two of my favorite characters besides Morgan. It seems like this could be a season filled with surprises so I'm anxious to see what unfolds.

So when are all these shows on and what networks show them?
Monday: Hart of Dixie, WB, 8PM CST; Castle, ABC, 9PM CST

Tuesday: NCIS, CBS, 7PM CST; NCIS:LA, CBS, 8PM CST; Biggest Loser, NBC, 7PM CST; Body of Proof, ABC, 9PM CST

Wednesday: Criminal Minds, CBS, 8PM CST; Revenge, ABC, 9PM CST

Thursday: Vampire Diaries, CW, 7PM CST; Secret Circle, CW, 8PM CST; Bones, FOX, 8PM CST; Grey's Anatomy, ABC, 8PM CST; Private Practice, ABC, 9PM CST

What's in your fall TV lineup?

Bye Bye Allan, a Migraine, & My Truck's Birthday!

Well, if you had told me I would start my Wednesday morning at 4:30 AM I would have called you crazy. Allan knows I hate to wake up so early and he conveniently withheld his departure time until last night. Now in his defense I'm sure that he had told me before then when I would need to take him to the airport and at the time I was probably on here catching up on blogs so I was listening to him but not really hearing what he was saying. Shortly after 5 I left him at the airport to catch his flight to Houston which would then take him out west where he will be until at least Saturday and possibly until next Friday.

Allan was not very excited that I insisted on taking a picture for the blog
Now when I'm "husbandless" as I like to call it I normally keep the house extremely clean because I take my shoes off at the front door, don't leave things strewn throughout the house, and eat like a bird so the kitchen stays spotless. I also relish sleeping late and positioning myself directly in the middle of the bed for optimum sleep. All this is fine and dandy until something like a migraine strikes. After returning home before 6AM I climbed back into bed and when I woke up at 10 the pain behind my eye was a sure sign that a migraine was about to hit. Sure enough within an hour it was worse but I thought I could tough it out and at least get in my run this morning. (I even took the time to take pictures of myself before taking off!)

Tshirt, Nike shorts, and Pumas-pretty standard running outfit for me

This was really more to highlight how crazy my hair has been acting with all the rain
I've started walking out to the main street into our neighborhood and then running either the long loop or short loop and then repeating until I'm tired. I made it more than halfway from our house to the end of the street before the sunlight and movement made me feel sick and I was heading back to the house. It's really difficult to describe how debilitating a migraine can be unless you've had one. Nonetheless I am squeaking out a blog post before I let the drugs take effect and become completely useless.

10 years ago today I drove my beautiful truck off the lot. I was a senior in high school and it was a Friday afternoon after volleyball practice when my dad picked me up and we drove to the Chevy Dealership in Selma, AL. It had 3.3 miles on it that day when I first got behind the wheel and 10 years later she's sitting at a little under 135,000. In the last decade this truck has saved my life TWICE. I was rear ended my sophomore year of college and if I had been in a car I probably would have been crushed under the large truck in front of me . Later that same year I hydroplaned in Dallas and then got hit head on. Both the truck and I walked away (she was almost totalled). I plan to drive her until she dies and can no longer be repaired although knock on wood I have yet to replace anything but brake pads and a battery. Not that I wouldn't love to drive a 2012 Chevy Silverado off the lot today but my 2002 Chevy Silverado has been through a lot with me and I can't imagine driving anything else until her time is up.

Do you get migraines?
Have you had your truck, car, or SUV for a long time?

FFL Update & My Sister

Well, this week I can't report a win for both of us in Fantasy Football. Allan beat his older brother and I lost to my sister. It was close and literally came down to the end of the Rams vs. Giants game to know if I would win or lose but in the end she squeaked out the win 89-80. This week I play Allan's older brother and he plays one of our sweet friends who was a bridesmaid in our wedding. Let's keep our fingers crossed that we both get a win this week!

Since she beat me in Fantasy Football this week I thought it might be a perfect time to talk a little bit about my sister. We are 23 months apart (I'm the older one) and NOW we are really close. This was not the case when we were younger. We fought like cats and dogs until well after I left for college at Auburn. If not for each other I don't know that either of us would have ever gotten in trouble when we were younger!

Getting ready before Rachel's wedding
From August 2008-May 2009 we actually lived together in Auburn with another of our friends. During that year I finished my thesis, graduated with my Master's, started my job, and planned my wedding. Rachel started a second bachelor's degree, started dating her now husband again (they had dated before), and realized that Biochemistry was not going to be her friend. The week of our honeymoon Rachel & Michael got engaged as did Allan's older brother Austin & Krista. In August of 2009 Rachel & Michael and Austin & Krista both got married. Most people have looks of shock and horror when we tell them that we got married in the same summer. Crazy, I know, but luckily we handled most all of the planning and details ourselves which kept the cost down and kept our parents from stressing too much over both of their girls getting married.

Rachel & her husband leaving their reception
Within 6 months of our weddings Rachel & Michael were stationed in Columbus, MS, and Allan & I had bought our first house in Madison, AL. In late July of this year Rachel & Michael moved to Navarre, FL, to their next base and they bought their first house. Although we live 6 hours apart now we talk almost daily and are constantly planning when we will see each other next. With the move to FL I have been encouraging Rachel to start a blog so if you want to encourage her to do so please leave a comment (she reads my blog and the comments) and/or a suggestion for a name for her blog. I love you Rachel even if I don't say it often!

Have a great Tuesday everybody and don't forget to enter Jenn's giveaway for a $10 Starbucks giftcard. You can read my post from yesterday for more details and to find a link to her giveaway!

What's New Around the House

Last week I snagged some great finds at TJMaxx and Marshall's. I lucked out and went to Marshall's when they had yellow tag clearance items and got GREAT deals. I'm talking baby clothes that ranged from $.30-$3 (several of the items are Polo) and Calvin Klein shorts for me that were $7. This week I made another round to the thrift stores where I found several books, 3 garden flags, and another bookcase.

Hawaiian Wind Chime I scored at TJMaxx for $7.50

It's hanging right outside of our big window in the den where I normally work from-makes me think of Jenn!

I had seen this little red treasure on a previous trip and picked it up on my second trip for $10

Bookcase-Goodwill $35: love the color and the red is the perfect pop of color!
The flags will make their appearance on the blog as the seasons change and we put them out. I also found 55 books this week and paid less than $25 for all of them!!! Several will be given as gifts but I did find several for myself. I'm anxious to have time to curl up in my big chair in the library with a large cup of coffee and a great book to read!

Anything new at your house?
